The Cave House

A solitary fortress in the mountainside. A sanctuary of comfort amidst the bushveld. A strange home full of wonder and paleolithic sentiments.
No sooner had we bought a TLB (digger-grader) than we embarked on our most ambitious project yet - a house in the hill. The valley is located in an area famous for its ancient fossils and stone-age impliments (literaly find them everywhere) that connect us to our distant ansestors who used to live in these very hills. Something about this site and the valley just envoked the urge in us to build a cave. The cave was created by excavating into the mountain side and building a deep stone lined bunker into the cavity. Then, once a thick concrete slab had been cast to cover the space, the mountain was pulled back on top of the cavity, hidding the internal structure. Although built with thick stone walls, huge steel sections, concrete and glass, the Cave has a warm & cozy feel with natural light flowing in from skylights along the high stone walls and soft wooden finishes.
The Cave is a beautiful stone house built into the side of the mountain at the top of the valley, over-looking a gorgeous forested amphitheater. The house is open plan with large fully equipped kitchen, bedroom with wooden flooring and dinning are with a wood-burner fireplace. A long glass sliding door opens out onto the terrace where evenings can be spent around the fire beneath the starry sky. Another level of the terrace has a large roof suspending a hanging day-bed and sheltering an outside dinning and lounge area. The Cave was designed to stay warm in winter and cool in summer, making it an ideal escape at any time of year. The rock pool is a short 15 minute walk away, and the view of the Magalies mountain and the amphitheatre makes for a superb setting for long, relaxing days.
